Apple’s latest iPhone 16e launch has brought unexpected pricing shifts, raising concerns about upcoming iPhone 17 models.

While the device was expected to succeed the iPhone SE, it instead debuted with a significantly higher price tag—a move that hints at bigger changes ahead.

A Costly Upgrade from the iPhone SE

Leading up to the announcement, leaks correctly predicted the A18 chip, 8GB RAM, Face ID, USB-C, and an iPhone 14-style design for the new iPhone.

However, what caught many by surprise was the pricing strategy.

  • iPhone SE (previous model): $429
  • iPhone 16e: $599

With a $170 price increase, the iPhone 16e is no longer a budget-friendly option.

Early speculation suggested a $499 price point, but Apple’s decision to go higher signals a broader pricing adjustment across the iPhone lineup.

Is Apple Preparing for a Major iPhone 17 Price Shift?

The iPhone 16e’s $599 starting price is likely to impact Apple’s entire pricing structure. Previously, the iPhone SE filled the entry-level gap, but with that model gone, Apple may raise prices across the board for the iPhone 17 series.

The upcoming iPhone 17 Air, rumored to replace the Plus model, is another reason why a pricing shift seems inevitable.

While early reports suggested it could be priced even higher than Apple’s Pro models, newer leaks indicate it will still command a premium price tag.

The Current iPhone Pricing Landscape

With the SE’s discontinuation, Apple’s lineup now starts at $599:

  • iPhone 16e – $599
  • iPhone 15 – $699
  • iPhone 15 Plus – $799
  • iPhone 16 – $799
  • iPhone 16 Plus – $899
  • iPhone 16 Pro – $999
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max – $1,199

With no affordable entry-level option, it’s highly likely that iPhone 17 pricing will shift upward, making Apple’s flagship models even more expensive.

What to Expect for iPhone 17 Pricing

Apple’s pricing strategy has remained relatively stable despite inflation, but the iPhone 16e’s higher-than-expected cost suggests the company is ready to restructure its lineup.

With the introduction of the iPhone 17 Air, expect Apple to adjust pricing tiers across the board, possibly pushing base models higher while positioning the Air as a premium alternative.

For now, the iPhone 16e serves as the first major indicator of a more expensive iPhone future, and this fall’s iPhone 17 launch could bring even bigger price shifts.
