IMAX Sees Huge Success in China With Event-Style Movie Screenings

IMAX had a record year in China in 2025, thanks to the popularity of animated hits like Ne Zha 2 and “Zootopia 2.” The country’s box office revenue grew 20% to $7.4 billion, setting the stage for further growth in 2026.

IMAX China CEO Daniel Manwaring said movies with strong characters are key to success. Films that audiences want to follow over time, like “Ne Zha 2” and “Demon Slayer,” generate repeat viewings and emotional attachment.

Another growth factor is turning moviegoing into a social event. Fans attended live F1 races, League of Legends competitions, and Taylor Swift concert films at IMAX theaters, creating interactive, communal experiences.

IMAX’s China box office alone rose 5% above the previous record in 2019, helping IMAX Corp. reach $1.28 billion worldwide in IMAX ticket sales—a 40% jump from 2024. IMAX China operates 787 screens, nearly double the U.S. total.

The company plans to expand further through partnerships with Wanda Film, Hengdian, and Bona. Up to 27 theaters will be converted to IMAX systems by 2029, boosting premium offerings and fan experiences.

IMAX also benefits from the growing “film+” ecosystem, including merchandise, IP derivatives, and movie tourism. Film-related merchandise in China surged 120% year-over-year in 2025, showing the power of the fan economy.

Manwaring believes that combining event-style screenings with strong, character-driven films allows IMAX to reach beyond traditional moviegoers, making theaters both a cultural and social hub.

China-made films like “Ne Zha 2” prove that emotionally engaging stories with cultural resonance can appeal globally, helping IMAX strengthen its brand and reach new audiences.
