Shakira and The Weeknd will headline this year’s Global Citizen Festival, set to take place on September 27 at New York’s Central Park. The event, hosted by actor and Global Citizen ambassador Hugh Jackman, will also feature performances from Tyla, Ayra Starr, and Mariah the Scientist. More artists are expected to be announced soon.
The Global Citizen Festival is an annual music event that promotes social causes and encourages people to take action on global issues. According to organizers, this year’s campaign focuses on providing energy access to one million people in Africa, supporting education and football programs for 30,000 children worldwide in partnership with FIFA, raising $200 million to protect 30 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest, and recruiting 40,000 volunteers across New York City.
Tickets for the festival are free and can be earned by participating in social action campaigns through the Global Citizen app or website.
“I’m honored to headline the incredible Global Citizen Festival in Central Park this September,” said Shakira in a statement. “Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world. I can’t wait to perform, unite, and inspire action.”
Hugh Jackman, who has hosted the event for 11 years, said he is excited to continue supporting Global Citizen’s mission. “The growing impact of the Global Citizen movement touches every corner of the world, and I’m eager to advocate alongside my fellow ambassadors, performers, world leaders, and private sector executives to leave the world better than we found it,” he said.
Global Citizen has also recently co-produced the first-ever FIFA Club World Cup halftime show, featuring Doja Cat, J Balvin, Tems, and Coldplay with Emmanuel Kelly at MetLife Stadium earlier this month.
