Arrowhead Studio’s CCO, Johan Pilestedt, recently sparked a debate on Twitter about the role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in game design.
Responding to a comment about avoiding DEI in games, Pilestedt emphasized that making a great game should always be the priority.
Helldivers 2, released in February 2024, was a major success, selling millions of copies across PS5 and PC.
The game features players uniting to fight against alien and robot invaders to spread democracy from Super Earth.
As Pilestedt engaged with his Twitter followers about his studio’s next project, one comment stood out, stating, “Never add DEI to your games.” Pilestedt responded by saying, “If it doesn’t add to your game experience, it detracts. And games should be a pure pursuit of amazing moments.”
When asked how DEI could have benefited Helldivers 2, Pilestedt replied, “I don’t like labels. But mankind is united in its extreme xenophobia on Super Earth. #Inclusion so, maybe that’s DEI? I really don’t care. Make good games, don’t make a contemporary political statement.”
His comments sparked mixed reactions. Some users believe Helldivers 2 already makes a political statement through its setting, while others see it as a satirical take, similar to the Starship Troopers movie.
Pilestedt’s point was clear: developers should not add DEI elements just to “tick a box.” It’s essential that such elements enhance the game experience rather than detract from it.
As for Arrowhead Studio’s next project, Pilestedt has teased a high concept but remains tight-lipped about the details.
He has jokingly engaged with fans’ speculations, even sharing an old concept photo in response to a user’s suggestion for a Star Fox-style game.
Helldivers 2 is available for purchase on PC (via Steam) and PS5.
