Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron, a documentary about the legendary Studio Ghibli director, is coming to Netflix on December 6 (except in the US).
The film follows Miyazaki’s seven-year journey to create his second Oscar-winning animated feature, The Boy and the Heron. The documentary explores themes of mortality and creativity as the director grapples with his legacy.
Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki are synonymous with masterpieces like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away.
Fans may also look forward to new projects, as Miyazaki’s son, Goro, teased an upcoming action-adventure film that could be a sequel to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
While The Boy and the Heron may be Miyazaki’s final film, many of Studio Ghibli’s iconic works are available for streaming outside the US and Japan, including Grave of the Fireflies, which debuted earlier this year.
Stay tuned for more updates on Miyazaki’s films and the documentary’s official release.
