In the wake of the much-anticipated GTA 6 trailer, former Rockstar developer Mike York has weighed in on the game’s remarkable visual improvements, emphasizing that its level of detail and realism makes it worth every cent, regardless of its price tag.
York, who worked as an animator at Rockstar from 2012 to 2017, has seen his fair share of gaming evolution, but even he is impressed by the groundbreaking advancements on display in GTA 6.
York specifically pointed out the notable improvement in the game’s lighting from the first to the second trailer. According to him, Rockstar’s development team has likely cracked a new method for lighting, particularly in terms of ray tracing and reflections, which has dramatically enhanced the game’s visual fidelity.
“They figured out how to solve this new thing to make the lighting look much better, and then they just crank that up to 10, 11,” York said in a video reaction to the new trailer.
Though the price of GTA 6 has yet to be revealed, York suggests that it will be worth whatever Rockstar decides to charge. With games like Mario Kart now being sold for as much as $90, York believes that the amount of detail and work put into GTA 6 far outweighs other titles.
“You think Mario Kart competes with a game like this, as far as how much stuff they’ve got to put into a game?” York asks, arguing that GTA 6 offers a level of depth and realism that is unmatched by other titles on the market.
Even though the second GTA 6 trailer mainly consisted of cinematic footage, fans and industry veterans alike are buzzing about the game’s potential, with many believing that it is a glimpse into the future of gaming.
As the game gears up for its May 2026 release, GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious and visually stunning games ever created, and Mike York’s comments only add to the growing excitement around Rockstar’s latest masterpiece.
