Google has quietly rolled out a powerful new security update for Android 16 that brings iPhone-like privacy protection to Pixel devices.
Known as Advanced Protection Mode, this surprise feature significantly reduces the risk of malware and online threats by blocking sideloaded apps and dangerous network connections.
Initially unexpected in the beta version, the feature is now available for testers, and it’s expected to be included in the full Android 16 release coming next month.
Once enabled, Advanced Protection:
- Blocks app installations outside the Play Store
- Prevents connection to unsafe Wi-Fi networks
- Enables advanced scam and fraud detection
- Disables USB data transfer to avoid tampering
- Activates secure, tamper-proof intrusion detection logs
This new mode is designed for high-risk users, such as journalists or public figures, but experts suggest it’s also useful for everyday users who want stronger protection without tweaking technical settings.
Google says it will continue enhancing Advanced Protection and plans to add API support for third-party apps to leverage the security benefits. With this move, Pixel devices are leading Android’s transformation into a more secure and privacy-focused ecosystem.
