Google has confirmed that some Pixel 6A smartphones will soon receive a mandatory software update to address battery overheating risks.
The update will reduce the phone’s battery capacity and charging performance after it reaches 400 charge cycles to prevent overheating issues.
This action follows reports of Pixel 6A units catching fire, with at least two confirmed incidents, including a Reddit user who said their phone “spontaneously combusted in the middle of the night.” Google plans to notify affected users next month with full details and support options.
Earlier this year, Google issued a similar update for Pixel 4A devices, and in April, it extended a repair program for battery swelling on Pixel 7A phones.
Additionally, code strings in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 have hinted at further mitigation plans, though the official support page is not live yet.
While concerning, Google is actively working to prevent further risks through software controls rather than hardware recalls.
