Google Tests Stylish Gemini Launch with Shrinking Borders on Android 16

Google is testing a new launch animation for the Gemini overlay with Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2. The update also confirms that the missing vibration during launch is likely a bug, not a feature change.

In Beta 2, the “Press & hold power button” gesture to open Gemini lost its usual haptic feedback. However, the Power menu still vibrates normally, suggesting that this bug only affects the Digital Assistant option.

Now, some users testing Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 have seen a new launch animation for Gemini. With this animation, the vibration is back. When activated, the current screen shrinks inward with black borders appearing from all sides. Once the borders close in, the Gemini overlay slides up. The usual features—like Share screen with Live, Ask about screen, and the Ask Gemini field—appear as normal.

After that, the screen returns to fullscreen so you can interact with Gemini as usual. The animation is smooth and creates a cool effect, making it feel like your display itself is shrinking.

Right now, this test is only available for some Pixel users. It has not rolled out widely yet.

In addition to the Gemini animation, Google is also A/B testing a new Pixel Launcher search bar with AI Mode. While it disappeared for some testers recently, the gradient ‘G’ logo remains visible.
