Google CEO Sundar Pichai has confirmed that the company has reduced its top management roles by 10%.
This move is part of an ongoing effort to improve efficiency and streamline operations. The announcement was made during an all-hands meeting with employees on Wednesday.
The job cuts, which include managers, directors, and vice presidents, are part of Google’s long-term strategy to simplify the company.
Some of the affected employees will transition to individual contributor roles, while others will have their positions eliminated. This is the latest in a series of layoffs that began in 2022 as part of an efficiency drive.
Pichai explained that the company had been working to reduce layers and reorganize teams to make Google more efficient.
This comes as a response to the growing competition from AI companies like OpenAI, which are challenging Googleโs core business, especially its search engine.
The layoffs are the fourth round of job cuts this year. Earlier in 2024, Google had already eliminated positions in its global advertisements and cloud units. In total, the company has cut thousands of jobs since launching its efficiency initiative in 2022.
Despite the job cuts, Google has continued to innovate. The company recently introduced new AI features, including a video generator that outperformed OpenAIโs in early tests. These efforts are part of Googleโs response to the rise of AI technologies that threaten its search dominance.
Pichai has emphasized that the company is focusing on becoming 20% more efficient and adapting to the changing tech landscape.
While the layoffs have been difficult, Pichai acknowledged that they were necessary to maintain the company’s long-term growth.
