Google Restores Internet-Based Transfers in Quick Share

Quick Share

Google is bringing back a useful feature to Quick Share, allowing file transfers to continue over mobile data or Wi-Fi if a direct connection is lost. This update arrives with the latest Google Play Services (version 25.04, February 2025).

Previously, if a Quick Share transfer was interrupted, users had to restart the process from scratch. With this update, transfers can resume automatically, making it easier to share large files or multiple items without frustration.

This feature is similar to Samsung’s Quick Share, which already allows internet-based transfers when a local connection fails. Interestingly, Google’s Nearby Share previously had this capability, but it disappeared when Google and Samsung merged their sharing solutions.

While this is a welcome improvement, it might not be ideal for users with slow mobile data or Wi-Fi. Hopefully, Google will provide an option to disable this fallback in settings.

This update is part of a broader Google Play system update that also includes:

  • A new Family Link entry in Google Settings for easier family group management.
  • Bug fixes for device connection services across phones, TVs, Wear OS, and Auto.
  • New AI and machine learning features for developers.
