Google’s Cloud Ambitions Grow with This Potential $23B Acquisition

Google is reportedly in talks to acquire Wiz, a cloud cybersecurity startup, for a staggering $23 billion. If successful, this would mark Google’s largest acquisition to date, nearly doubling its previous record set by the $12.5 billion Motorola Mobility purchase in 2012.

Wiz, a New York City-based company, specializes in enterprise-level cloud security solutions. The startup’s technology creates a “normalizing layer” between cloud environments, allowing businesses to quickly identify and address critical security risks across their infrastructure.

The potential acquisition is being spearheaded by Google Cloud boss Thomas Kurian, according to sources familiar with the matter. This move appears to be part of Google’s broader strategy to bolster its cloud security offerings and compete more effectively with rivals like Microsoft, which has recently faced high-profile security breaches.

If the deal goes through, it would follow Google’s recent investments in cloud security, including the $500 million purchase of another startup in 2022 and the $5.4 billion acquisition of Mandiant, known for uncovering the SolarWinds hack.

While the acquisition “looks likely,” according to reports, it may face scrutiny from U.S. regulators given the current administration’s focus on antitrust actions in the tech sector. The deal’s size and potential market impact could trigger reviews from regulatory bodies.

This potential purchase underscores the growing importance of cybersecurity in the cloud computing landscape and highlights Google’s commitment to strengthening its position in this crucial market segment.
