In a major move for the Chromium browser ecosystem, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Opera have teamed up with the Linux Foundation to form the Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers.
This new group aims to provide the resources needed for Chromium-based projects to thrive, fostering collaboration among industry leaders, academia, and the open-source community.
The initiative seeks to ensure that Chromium projects continue to receive the necessary financial and developmental support.
Despite the consortium’s backing, the Chromium governance will remain unchanged, with projects continuing under their current structures.
Google, which has made the majority of contributions to Chromium, is enthusiastic about the support from other companies.
Microsoft also highlighted its ongoing commitment to Edge and the Chromium project, while Opera sees this as an opportunity to play a more active role in the development of Chromium.
For Firefox, this development may pose a significant challenge. With Chromium-based browsers like Chrome and Edge receiving increased backing, Firefox, which uses the Gecko engine, may face further struggles in the browser market, where it currently holds only about 6% of the desktop market share.
