Google is rolling out new features in its Messages app that give users more control over how others see them. The latest beta version (20241112_00_RC00) introduces two key changes that make the messaging experience better.
The biggest change is that your Google profile picture and name can now show up exactly as you want them to when chatting with others. While people can still change your name in their contacts, your profile picture will stay the same as you set it. For privacy, you can choose who sees your profile:
- People you message with
- Only your contacts
- No one at all
The update also adds a new “Sending as” banner during chats, making it clearer how your messages are being sent.
These features are currently only available to users who have joined the Google Messages beta program. While beta software might have some bugs, users interested in trying these new features can sign up for the beta version.
This update is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to improve Messages, especially as RCS messaging becomes more widespread and Apple prepares to support it.
