After multiple design changes, Google Messages has rolled out another update to its text field, with the most recent beta version offering a more refined layout.
Earlier this year, Google introduced a pill-shaped compose field, but it received backlash and was reverted. The new design now includes a left-aligned text field with buttons arranged differently: the Plus button on the left, followed by Magic Compose, Emoji, and Gallery. The Voice Memo/Send button remains separate on the right.
While this new layout is cleaner and more intuitive, especially with the Plus button at the left (which aligns with muscle memory), itโs still evolving.
Google may eventually streamline it further by bringing back Magic Compose/Rewrite options in the smart reply suggestions. The update also brings a redesign for read receipts, but this feature is only visible in the message list and may still have some bugs.
This update, which is part of the 20241202_01_RC00 beta, is not yet widely rolled out.
