Google Maps Adds Screenshot Recognition to iPhones, Saving Users Time

Google Maps has rolled out a smart new feature for iPhone users that reads location information directly from your screenshots. This update aims to make finding saved places quicker and easier than ever.

The feature, which is currently only available in the U.S., scans your iPhone’s photo library for screenshots that contain addresses or map data.

It then pulls up those locations in Google Maps, letting you instantly get directions or save them for later.

Instead of manually typing in names or addresses you’ve grabbed from social media, websites, or messages, Google Maps now does the work for you. These screenshots appear in a new “Screenshots” tab under the “You” section of the app.

Google uses its AI assistant, Gemini, to power the feature. It can recognize places from your images, help you navigate there, and suggest ways to explore those areas.

Users can manage the feature easily. You can manually add or delete screenshots from the carousel or turn the feature off entirely if you prefer to keep your photo library private.

Android users are still waiting for this update, and Google hasn’t announced when it will arrive. Meanwhile, Apple Maps users don’t have a similar tool yet, although Apple may be working on AI features of its own.

This new feature could give iPhone users another reason to choose Google Maps over Apple Maps, especially with its faster updates and smarter tools.
