Google has quietly launched a powerful new AI app that works even without an internet connection — a big move for mobile users and AI fans.
The app, called Google AI Edge Gallery, allows Android users to run advanced AI models locally on their phones. This includes models from Hugging Face and Google’s own Gemma 3n AI. That means users can chat with AI, generate text, and even summarize articles offline.
Currently, the app is only available through GitHub, not the Play Store. To install it, Android users need to download the APK file manually and change their phone settings to allow unknown apps. You also need a Hugging Face account to access and download the models.
Key features include:
- Offline AI access, including during airplane mode
- Prompt Lab for tasks like summarizing or rewriting text
- Model performance controls, including CPU/GPU selection
- Temperature tracking to avoid overheating
The app is designed for high-end smartphones such as the Galaxy S25 Ultra or the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS support is coming soon). But even older phones like the OnePlus 7 Pro have been reported to run the models smoothly with minimal heating.
While still experimental, and with some occasional crashes and accuracy issues, the Google AI Edge Gallery shows promise. Users can run creative and practical AI tasks locally, without any cloud access.
As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, this app could be a game changer — especially for those who want AI on-the-go, even when there’s no internet.
