Google Assistant Gets a Major Upgrade with Gemini AI Voices

Google has integrated its Gemini AI into Google Assistant, enhancing the voices on smart speakers like the Nest Mini and Nest Audio.

This update, which started rolling out earlier this month, introduces more conversational, lifelike voices.

Thanks to 9to5 Google, we now have samples of the seven new voices, each named after a plant with unique characteristics:

  • Aloe: Calm, mid-range voice
  • Oxalis: Bright, mid-range voice
  • Fern: Bright, higher voice
  • Verbena: Calm, deeper voice
  • Ivy: British accent, mid-range voice
  • Jade: Engaging, mid-range voice
  • Eucalyptus: Australian accent, higher voice

To access these voices, you need to join the Google Home Public Preview program, though there’s no guarantee you’ll get the “Experimental AI features” toggle. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you can find the new voices in the Google Home settings.

Once enabled, you’ll hear a chime before Google Assistant responds, signaling the use of the Gemini large language model.

This upgrade brings more in-depth, AI-powered responses, including the ability to ask follow-up questions and interrupt Assistant.

While access to this feature is still limited, the future of Google Assistant looks promising with more natural-sounding voices and enhanced capabilities.

It’s possible that “Hey, Gemini” could eventually replace “Hey, Google” in the future.
