Google has confirmed the latest AI-driven phishing attacks targeting Gmail users, warning that even highly tech-savvy individuals can be caught by increasingly sophisticated tactics.

This new wave of attacks involved a fake call from Google’s support team claiming that someone had tried to access an account overseas. Despite the professional appearance, this scam was thwarted only when the scam caller slipped up.

Google emphasizes that no tech company—including Google—will ever initiate unsolicited calls to reset passwords or troubleshoot issues.

The company is working on strengthening defenses to prevent scammers from impersonating its domains, but experts stress that simple caution should have stopped this attack in its tracks.

The FBI has also issued a stark reminder that legitimate companies will never call you out of the blue for account-related requests. It’s crucial to recognize these warning signs and never trust unsolicited calls, whether from tech support or financial institutions.

The attack highlights the growing threat of AI-fueled fraud, making it even more critical to stick to the basics and always be cautious of unexpected calls.
