GitHub CEO: Smartest Companies Will Hire More Developers as AI Grows

24
Thomas Dohmke (GitHub CEO)

Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, says the smartest companies will focus on hiring even more software engineers as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to develop. Speaking on “The Silicon Valley Girl Podcast,” Dohmke explained that AI makes developers more productive rather than replacing them.

“The companies that are the smartest are going to hire more developers,” Dohmke said. “If you 10x a single developer, then 10 developers can do 100x.”

Dohmke highlighted that AI has made it much easier to learn programming and helps professionals speed up their work. However, he emphasized that strong technical skills will continue to be valuable. “The idea that AI without any coding skills lets you just build a billion-dollar business is mistaken. If that were true, everyone would do it,” he added.

While some tech companies are slowing hiring or even cutting jobs as they explore AI, Dohmke believes this is temporary. He expects that businesses will soon realize the benefits of hiring more skilled engineers to take full advantage of AI tools.

“I haven’t seen companies saying, ‘We’re draining all our backlog and we have almost nothing left,’” Dohmke noted. He explained that AI has actually created more work for developers, not less.

Dohmke called this “the most exciting time to be a developer” and believes AI is making software development easier and more innovative for everyone.
