Lee Jung-jae, the star of Netflix’s global hit Squid Game, has praised the series’ creator for ending the show with artistic integrity rather than stretching it out for commercial gain.

In an interview with The Korea Times, the Emmy-winning actor reflected on the emotional impact of the show’s third and final season, which concludes with his character’s ultimate sacrifice.

“Above all, an overwhelming sense comes from undergoing a truly immense experience,” Lee said. “I’m grateful for the outpouring of attention and affection.”

Lee plays Gi-hun, a man haunted by the failure of a rebellion during the deadly games. In the final episodes, consumed by guilt, he chooses to sacrifice himself for a baby born during the games — a moment Lee described as one of the most powerful of the series.

The actor commended Squid Game creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk for choosing to end the series rather than turning it into a long-running franchise. “Because the series was such a huge success, usually it would keep going… I was amazed by Hwang’s courage,” Lee said. “It made me think this person truly values the quality of the work over business.”

Lee acknowledged that the final season received mixed reactions from viewers. While some found it a “satisfying finale,” others called it “unpleasant” and said the show had “lost its edge.”

“Mixed reactions are inevitable,” Lee said. “Squid Game was never just about entertainment. It had strong messages, and those naturally lead to different interpretations and debates.”

Now 52, Lee described Squid Game as the most defining work of his life and career. Since its debut, he has become one of the most recognized Korean actors worldwide.

“Everywhere I go, people recognize me. It makes me think, ‘Wow, Squid Game is really something,’” he said.

He also expressed hope that the global success of Squid Game would lead to more attention for Korean content. “I hope this door, which suddenly opened, doesn’t close, but continues to expand.”
