Four Seasons’ Sudden Death Twist Sparks Steve Carell Theory on Netflix

Netflix viewers were stunned by a surprise death in Four Seasons, and now many fans think there might be a deeper reason behind it.

The show, based on Alan Alda’s 1981 romantic comedy, brings big stars like Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and Colman Domingo together for an eight-episode series. It follows three married couples who meet for seasonal weekend trips. But drama builds after one couple divorces, changing the group dynamic.

In the second-to-last episode, Nick — played by Steve Carell — dies suddenly in a car crash. The death happens off-screen during a New Year’s ski trip. The suddenness of the event has left fans asking: was this part of the plan, or did Carell choose to leave?

One Reddit user speculated, “Maybe Steve Carell didn’t want to return for another season, so they killed off his character.” Others noted that Nick’s actions on the show, including cheating on his wife Anne, made him harder to sympathize with.

Some fans felt the cheating storyline wasn’t addressed deeply enough, while others said they hoped Anne would have had a better arc without Nick.

Interestingly, Nick survives in the original movie, so this change was unexpected. However, there’s no confirmation that Carell requested the death. In fact, Carell joked to Netflix, “It’s a running joke now that I die in every TV show that I’m in. I hope to continue to die in TV shows well into the future.”

Colman Domingo, who plays one of the friends, said Nick’s death was “a punch in the gut,” noting the emotional weight it added to the story.

Despite the twist, writers are already considering Season 2. They plan to focus more on Ginny and Anne, whose children will be half-siblings, opening the door for more drama and connection.

Tina Fey also hinted that the cast is eager to reunite, saying, “We’d certainly all like to hang out again.”

Four Seasons is streaming now on Netflix.
