Fans Think DreamWorks Is Rewriting Shrek 5 After Leak of Plot and Character Designs

DreamWorks has pushed back the release of Shrek 5 from December 2026 to June 2027, surprising fans who were eagerly awaiting the next chapter of the beloved franchise.

The new movie will still feature Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz reprising their roles. Zendaya joins the cast as Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter.

Fans quickly shared their theories about the delay. Many believe the plot, revealed in a teaser showing Felicia as a teenager, centers on a father-daughter coming-of-age story. Shrek is expected to be an overprotective dad, while Felicia rebels and seeks independence, leading to funny and heartfelt moments.

Some even asked Twitter’s AI bot Grok about the plot. The bot’s answer matched what fans had guessed: a story about conflict and acceptance with plenty of humor and pop culture nods.

Because so many people figured out the plot early, some fans jokingly think DreamWorks is rewriting the script and delaying the film to start fresh.

Others believe the delay comes from backlash over the new character designs. Fans have criticized the updated animation style, and many think DreamWorks is reanimating the characters to bring back the classic look.

One fan wrote, “They definitely are changing the animation style after the backlash.” Another agreed, saying, “Oh, they’re 100% reanimating.”

DreamWorks has not commented on the delay or the fan theories.
