As fans eagerly await GTA 6, fresh rumors suggest that Grand Theft Auto IV might be making a return—and one veteran Rockstar developer is fully on board with the idea.
Obbe Vermeij, who served as technical director at Rockstar North during the development of GTA 4, recently responded to a fan on social media about the rumored modern port of the 2008 classic.
Vermeij, who worked at Rockstar from 1995 to 2009, had a direct hand in the creation of iconic titles including Manhunt and Space Station Silicon Valley alongside several GTA entries.
“I think GTA 4 should be remastered. It’s a great game and there have been a number of successful remasters recently,” Vermeij stated on Twitter.
His remarks follow a growing wave of speculation that Rockstar may soon re-release GTA 4 for modern platforms—possibly as a port rather than a full remaster. Industry insiders have also hinted that Max Payne 3 could follow soon after.
Rockstar’s Spotty Remaster History
Fans remain cautious due to Rockstar’s past efforts in remastering. The studio’s only major attempt, GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, was widely criticized for bugs and lackluster quality. Vermeij himself previously commented that “it would be better if Rockstar did quality remasters of their classic games,” reflecting broader fan sentiment.
While Rockstar typically favors straightforward ports—as seen with Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire—the potential re-release of GTA 4 could finally bring Niko Bellic’s story to a new generation of consoles.
No official word from Rockstar has been released yet, but a return to Liberty City might be just what fans need while waiting for GTA 6, now expected in May 2026 after a delay.
And yes, hopefully this time, we’ll still get those iconic calls to go bowling with our cousin Roman.
