Google is known for shutting down products, even those that were relatively popular. In 2024, several services and devices met their end, adding to the ever-growing list of Google Graveyard entries. Here’s a look at what Google killed this year.
1. The Google Bard Brand
Google Bard, which debuted in February 2023, was rebranded as Gemini in early 2024. While Bard was a fun name for Google’s AI chatbot, it was replaced to align with the broader Gemini AI portfolio. The transition to “Gemini” marked the end of Bard, though its technology lives on under a new name.
2. Keen
Launched in 2020, Keen was Google’s attempt at creating a Pinterest-like platform. It allowed users to curate content on specific topics. However, by March 2024, Keen was shut down, marking another failed social media experiment from Google.
3. Google Podcasts
After nearly six years of operation, Google Podcasts was officially shut down in April 2024. Despite being available on the Play Store, the service was often overshadowed by other Google apps. Now, YouTube Music has taken over as the platform for podcast content.
4. Dropcam
Acquired by Google in 2014, Dropcam was a smart camera brand. While Google continued to support Dropcam cameras for a decade, it ended in April 2024. Users were offered Nest Cams as replacements.
5. Nest Secure
Google’s DIY home security system, Nest Secure, was retired in April 2024. The system no longer connects to the internet, rendering it useless. Google offered ADTโs security system as a replacement.
6. VPN by Google One
The VPN service offered to Google One subscribers was shut down in June 2024. Although some Pixel devices now offer built-in VPN services, the shutdown of this standalone service impacted many users.
7. The Chromecast Brand
The Chromecast brand, which launched in 2013, has now been officially retired. The Chromecast with Google TV will no longer be manufactured, and the Chromecast name will be phased out. The technology will continue under the “Google Cast” brand.
8. Jamboard
Jamboard, Google’s smart whiteboard, was discontinued in December 2024. The app that supported it was also shut down, with existing “Jams” needing to be migrated to other apps. This enterprise-focused product is now officially dead.
Google continues to evolve, often retiring older products to make way for new innovations. While some of these shutdowns might not be widely mourned, they represent the fast-paced nature of tech development.
