Elon Musk Launches Macrohard, His AI Version of Microsoft

Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, has announced plans to launch a new AI-focused software company called Macrohard, which aims to simulate the operations of companies like Microsoft entirely through artificial intelligence.

Speaking on X (formerly Twitter) on August 22, Musk described the project as “tongue-in-cheek” but real, noting that software firms do not manufacture physical hardware, making it theoretically possible for AI to replicate their work.

Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, explained that Macrohard would provide “software solutions” including coding assistants, image generation tools, workflow automation, and other applications. Grok described the project as a multi-agent AI system that could handle all aspects of running a software company.

xAI filed a trademark application for Macrohard on August 1 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The application lists its purpose as downloadable software for producing human-like speech and text, as well as agentic AI applications.

The announcement comes amid public scrutiny over Musk’s recent Tesla pay package. Earlier this month, Musk received an interim award of 96 million shares, valued at about $29 billion, contingent on him remaining CEO for the next two years. The payout has drawn criticism from labor unions and advocacy groups, who argue that it poses risks to public pension funds and call for stronger board oversight at Tesla.

Musk’s brother, Kimbal Musk, recently stated that Elon has not received pay from Tesla for the past six to eight years, emphasizing that shareholders should decide on his compensation.

The Macrohard project highlights Musk’s ongoing interest in AI and software innovation, even as debates continue over executive pay and corporate governance.
