A Dutch court has annulled a marriage after ruling that part of the wedding ceremony was written using ChatGPT, making the union legally invalid.
The couple, from Zwolle in the Netherlands, were married in April 2025. The court voided the marriage on January 7, 2026, following a legal review of the ceremony.
According to Reuters, the official who conducted the wedding used a ChatGPT‑generated speech during the service. Because of this, the court ruled that the couple did not formally swear their marriage vows as required by law.
The AI‑written speech included phrases about being “a team” and “supporting each other even when life gets difficult.” While romantic in tone, the court said the words did not meet legal standards for a valid marriage declaration.
As part of the ruling, the court ordered the marriage to be removed from the official Zwolle registry. Judges said they understood the emotional importance of the original date but could not ignore the legal requirements.
The decision highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in personal life, and the legal risks that can come with it when rules are not followed.
It is not known whether the couple has remarried or plans to hold a new ceremony. Officials have not released the couple’s names or shared further details.
The case adds to a growing list of unusual legal disputes involving AI, raising questions about how far technology should be allowed to replace human roles in formal and legal settings.
