Director Denis Villeneuve has wrapped principal photography for Dune: Part Three, officially titled Dune Messiah. The third installment in the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune saga is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
Filming took place across the UAE’s Liwa Desert, Jordan’s Wadi Rum, and soundstages in Budapest, Hungary. The production combined practical effects with advanced visual effects to recreate the desert planet Arrakis. The wrap was celebrated with an on-set gathering of cast and crew after over 200 days of shooting, featuring complex sequences including sandstorms, zero-gravity simulations, and ornithopter action scenes.
Villeneuve described the chapter as the emotional core of Herbert’s story, focusing on the consequences of power. “Wrapping feels bittersweet, but knowing Paul’s journey will soon reach audiences worldwide? That’s the spice that keeps us going,” he said.
Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, with Zendaya reprising her role as Chani and Florence Pugh joining as Princess Irulan. New cast members include Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides and Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot Fenring. Christopher Walken returns as Emperor Shaddam IV, while Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin reprise their roles as Stilgar and Gurney Halleck, respectively.
The production also features Hans Zimmer’s evolving score, expanding Arrakis’ visual scope with bio-dome cities and sandworm sequences, and cutting-edge post-production techniques, including AI-assisted crowd scenes. Warner Bros. plans to position the film as a major holiday blockbuster, following the success of the franchise’s previous films, which grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide.
