Disney+ has made a bold move by adding two R-rated horror films to its streaming library for standalone subscribers. This marks another step away from the platform’s original family-friendly image.
The two new titles are:
28 Weeks Later (2007) – A sequel to the iconic zombie film 28 Days Later, this thriller continues the story of a deadly virus outbreak and the collapse of society.
Alien: Romulus (2024) – The latest entry in the Alien franchise, this sci-fi horror film features intense gore and a terrifying new creature that has shocked even longtime fans.
Both films originally came from 20th Century Studios, a Disney-owned company. Their addition to Disney+ is part of a growing trend of more adult-oriented content being made available on the platform, especially following the integration of Hulu content.
Previously, such titles were only available through the Hulu bundle, but now standalone Disney+ users can access these films directly.
This change follows similar moves, such as the platform’s inclusion of Deadpool & Wolverine, an R-rated Marvel film filled with graphic violence and language. Disney+ appears to be slowly redefining its content boundaries, likely to appeal to a broader audience.
For now, Alien: Romulus is the only Alien franchise movie on Disney+ without a Hulu subscription. The rest of the Alien and Predator sagas remain available via Hulu or the Disney+ bundle.
As Disney+ continues to evolve, more adult content could be on the way — a big shift from its 2019 launch as a kid-friendly streaming service.
