The Punjabi horror-comedy film Sardaar Ji 3, directed by Amar Hundal and starring Diljit Dosanjh, has become a major success overseas despite being banned from theatres in India. The film also features Neeru Bajwa, Jasmin Bajwa, and Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a lead role.
Why Was the Film Banned in India?
The film sparked controversy due to the casting of Hania Aamir, a popular actress from Pakistan. The backlash intensified after the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which worsened India-Pakistan relations.
Under public and political pressure, the producers chose to skip an Indian theatrical release and launched the film only in international markets, including Pakistan.
The filmmakers said Hania was signed months before the Pahalgam attack, and the movie was already completed by then. They emphasized that the decision was artistic, not political.
Despite the explanations, some Indian film industry groups demanded that Diljit Dosanjh be removed from future projects, highlighting the tension the casting created.
Box Office Success Abroad
Released on June 27, Sardaar Ji 3 received a huge response overseas, especially in Pakistan, where audiences filled theatres across the country.
- The film earned ₹11.03 crore globally in just two days
- ₹4.32 crore on Day 1
- ₹6.71 crore on Day 2
- It is now the biggest Indian film opener in Pakistan, surpassing the decade-old record held by Sultan starring Salman Khan.
Diljit Dosanjh shared multiple videos on social media showing cheering fans in Pakistani cinemas, expressing gratitude for the support despite the controversy.
Sardaar Ji 3 combines comedy, horror, and star power—but its real impact came from the storm around its release. While the movie was blocked in India due to the presence of a Pakistani actress, it found massive success abroad. The film’s creators maintain that it was made in good faith, before political tensions rose, and they continue to stand by the cast and the release strategy.
