Denis Villeneuve Confirms ‘Dune: Part Three’ Title, Filming Starts Soon

Director Denis Villeneuve’s next installment in the Dune saga now has an official name: Dune: Part Three. The film will adapt Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah and continue the story of Paul Atreides as he rises to power.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures confirmed the title after speculation it would be named Dune Messiah. The movie is listed as Dune: Part Three on Rentrak, an industry database.

Filming is set to begin soon, with returning stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Jason Momoa. While Momoa’s character did not appear in Part Two, he is confirmed for the third film.

Select scenes will be shot using Imax cameras, though not the entire film. This follows earlier comments by Imax CEO Richard Gelfond, who appeared to suggest it would be fully filmed with Imax cameras. Imax later clarified that Villeneuve will use their proprietary cameras for parts of the film only.

Gelfond also praised Villeneuve’s recent hiring to direct the next James Bond reboot by Amazon MGM Studios, calling him a “genius filmmaker.”

Although Dune: Part Three is commonly seen as the final part of a trilogy, Villeneuve views it differently. In an earlier statement, he said the first two films were a complete adaptation of the first Dune book and that the third will stand on its own, with a different tone and identity.

The film is expected to be released in December 2026.
