David Fincher is working on a U.S. spinoff of Squid Game, but a reported dispute over the show’s title is creating tension between the filmmaker and Netflix.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Fincher wants to drop the “Squid Game” title entirely and rename the series after an American childhood game, which has not yet been revealed.
However, Netflix reportedly insists on keeping “Squid Game” in the title for brand recognition and marketing power. No official name has been announced so far.
The spinoff is still in early development, and few details have been confirmed publicly. It’s expected to be set in the same universe as the original show but will take place in the United States with a new cast and storyline. Despite the title dispute, Netflix appears committed to moving forward with the project.
Original series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has given his blessing, saying:
“I’ve also read news about David Fincher taking on a spinoff… As a big fan of David Fincher, I hugely respect a lot of his work… I’m very excited to see what happens.”
Meanwhile, the Squid Game universe continues to grow. Season 3 of the original Korean series will premiere on June 27, 2025, marking the final season of the hit show.
Netflix is also bringing back its reality competition spin-off, Squid Game: The Challenge, for a second season following its success.
As anticipation builds, fans are watching closely to see whether Netflix or Fincher gets the final say on the American series’ title.
