CD Projekt has officially announced that Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, has now entered pre-production. The news came during the company’s latest financial update.
The game was previously known by its codename Project Orion, but the studio is now calling it Cyberpunk 2. So far, 96 developers are working on the game. Most of CD Projekt’s team — over 400 people — are currently focused on The Witcher 4.
Pre-production means the team is planning the full game, designing systems, and building early versions of gameplay. It can take several years before the game enters full production and even longer before release.
CD Projekt’s co-CEO said it typically takes four to five years from pre-production to final release, which means Cyberpunk 2 might not arrive until 2030 or later.
Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith also shared some exciting details. He said the sequel will include a new city along with Night City. He described the new place as feeling like “Chicago gone wrong”, giving fans a hint of a darker, more dangerous urban setting.
CD Projekt is also working on a new Cyberpunk animation for Netflix, following the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. In addition, Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 next month.
While there’s still a lot we don’t know, fans can now look forward to two big games from CD Projekt — The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 — in the years ahead.
