Apple’s Contact Key Verification feature, introduced with iOS 17.2 in December 2023, helps users ensure their messages are secure.
This tool is especially useful for journalists, activists, and others who need to verify they are messaging the right person.
With the release of iOS 18.1, more users are discovering this powerful security option.
How to Enable Contact Key Verification
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your Apple ID (your name and picture) at the top.
- Scroll down and select Contact Key Verification.
- Toggle on Verification in iMessage.
If prompted, update any other devices linked to your Apple ID to use this feature fully.
How It Works
Once enabled, you can verify someone’s identity in two ways:
- Public Verification Code: Go to Contact Key Verification in Settings and tap Show Public Verification Code. Share this code to confirm your identity.
- Generate Codes in Messages: Open a conversation in Messages, tap the person’s name at the top, and select Verify Contact. Compare the six-digit codes on both devices. If the codes match, tap Mark as Verified.
If the codes don’t match, stop messaging the person until their identity is confirmed.
Why It Matters
This feature ensures the person you’re messaging is who they claim to be. While most users may not need this level of security, it provides peace of mind in an age of increasing digital threats.
For added protection, always keep your iPhone updated and avoid sharing sensitive information without verification.
