Perplexity is giving students free access to its AI-powered web browser Comet, normally part of a $200 annual subscription. Verified students can unlock one month of Perplexity Pro for free through the company’s website.

Comet, which launched in July, is marketed as an alternative to Google Chrome and Apple Safari. Perplexity describes it as a “study buddy and tutor,” equipped with tools such as Study Mode and AI-generated flash cards that can be created from uploaded study materials.
Students can extend their free access by referring classmates — each referral adds another free month. Once the trial ends, the subscription will cost $4.99 per month, a 75% discount compared to the regular price.
Perplexity is also promoting the browser through partnerships, including a one-year free trial of Perplexity Pro for PayPal and Venmo users in select countries.
The initiative comes as AI tools become more common in education. Similar efforts include Grammarly’s AI writing agents for students and OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic’s $23 million investment in a teacher training center in New York City.
While AI companies say these products can improve study habits, critics argue they risk reducing students’ critical thinking skills if relied on too heavily. Whether Comet’s AI-driven features prove to be a long-term asset for learning remains to be seen.
