A new open-source artificial intelligence model, Chroma1, has been released, promising greater freedom for artists, researchers, and developers seeking text-to-image generation tools without corporate restrictions.

Developed under the pseudonym Lodestone Rock, Chroma1 is built on the FLUX.1-schnell architecture and trained with community funding rather than corporate sponsorship. The project emphasizes transparency, accessibility, and creative freedom, with its creator stating it is “fully Apache 2.0 licensed, ensuring that anyone can use, modify, and build on top of it.”

The model was trained on a curated set of 5 million images representing a wide range of styles, from anime to photography. With 8.9 billion parameters, Chroma1 incorporates efficiency improvements, replacing heavier components from its original 12B design with streamlined alternatives. Training consumed over 105,000 GPU hours, reflecting the project’s scale and ambition.

Chroma1 is reported to perform well in areas where AI models often struggle, including generating realistic human anatomy and handling complex prompts. It also runs efficiently, with benchmarks showing it can operate up to 2.5 times faster than comparable models on hardware such as the RTX 3080.

Several variants of Chroma1 have been introduced to support different use cases. These include a base version for general adaptation, a high-resolution model capable of producing 1024×1024 images, a speed-optimized “Flash” edition, and an experimental “Radiance” model designed to avoid compression artifacts.

The model integrates with tools like ComfyUI, making it easier for users to adapt workflows. Community forums, particularly Reddit and Hugging Face, play an active role in guiding Chroma1’s development, with ongoing discussions and contributions shaping future updates.

Chroma1’s release in August 2025 marks a significant milestone in community-driven AI development. Unlike commercial image generators, it offers an uncensored and permissively licensed alternative, potentially broadening creative possibilities for users worldwide.
