China is rapidly catching up to the United States in artificial intelligence development, according to experts and recent reports. While the U.S. remains the leader in AI, China’s progress is closing the quality and quantity gap.

In 2024, the U.S. had 40 major AI models, compared to China’s 15 and Europe’s 3, based on Stanford’s AI Index report. Although the U.S. leads in numbers, Chinese AI models are improving fast, especially in areas like language understanding, reasoning, and coding.

David Sacks, White House AI and Crypto Czar, said the U.S. is only about three to six months ahead of China in AI model development. Experts warn that winning the AI race is crucial for maintaining global leadership in the 21st century.

China’s AI app DeepSeek has gained millions of users and topped app store downloads in January 2025. Some U.S. states have banned the app on government devices due to concerns about surveillance and censorship.

China benefits from a centralized government and fewer privacy restrictions, which some say have helped its AI developers advance quickly. The U.S. has tried to maintain its lead through export controls on advanced technology, limiting Chinese access to critical AI chips.

NVIDIA, a leading American chipmaker, is about two years ahead of China’s Huawei in technology. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company also leads in chip production, although its location near China raises concerns about regional stability.

Experts stress the importance of responsible regulation that supports innovation without hindering U.S. competitiveness. The AI race will likely continue to shape the global balance of power in technology and economics.
