OpenAI has delayed the launch of ChatGPT’s planned “adult mode” until early next year, saying it needs more time to test its age verification system.

The feature, which would allow a less restricted version of ChatGPT for verified adults, was originally expected to arrive by the end of 2025. It is now scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2026.

Speaking during a recent briefing, Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief executive of applications, said the delay is linked to ongoing tests of the company’s age prediction technology. The system is designed to ensure that only users aged 18 and over can access adult content.

OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, first discussed the idea of an adult mode in October. He said it would allow more expressive interactions, including content such as erotica, for verified adults. The aim was to bring back some of the flexibility and personality seen in earlier versions of ChatGPT, such as GPT-4o.

The delay comes despite OpenAI’s recent rollout of its latest model, GPT-5.2, which offers faster responses, improved reasoning, and better handling of long documents. The new model does not yet include adult mode features.

According to OpenAI, the age prediction system is currently being tested in a limited number of countries. The company is assessing whether it can accurately identify teenagers without wrongly classifying adults. When a user is identified as under 18, additional safeguards are automatically applied.

The move reflects wider pressure on technology companies to strengthen age verification in response to new regulations and growing concerns about online safety. OpenAI says it is taking a cautious approach to avoid exposing underage users to inappropriate content.

The company has not given a precise launch date but says adult mode will be introduced once its age verification system meets its safety standards.
