Utah authorities have arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Robinson was taken into custody late Thursday in Washington County, about three hours south of the crime scene at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Governor Spencer Cox announced the arrest, saying, “We got him,” and praised the suspect’s family for their cooperation. Investigators said Robinson’s father recognized his son from FBI photos released earlier and, after Robinson admitted involvement, contacted a family friend who is a clergy member. That friend alerted law enforcement, leading to Robinson’s capture within 33 hours of the shooting.
Officials confirmed that Robinson is not a student at Utah Valley University. He briefly attended Utah State University in 2021 but left after one semester. Governor Cox said a family member described Robinson as becoming “more political” in recent years and expressing dislike for Kirk.
Authorities reported that bullet casings found at the scene carried unusual messages, including “Hey fascist! Catch!” and online meme references. Investigators are examining the markings for possible clues to Robinson’s motive.
FBI Director Kash Patel described the arrest as “historic progress,” noting that agents processed the large crime scene, gathered evidence, and tracked the suspect in record time. Robinson is currently being held at Utah County Jail while prosecutors prepare charges.
Governor Cox thanked Robinson’s family for “doing the right thing” and said the killing was “an attack on all of us,” highlighting the dangers of political violence.
