The U.K. government has issued a warning about the security risks of Bluetooth-enabled sex toys.
Hackers can potentially exploit vulnerabilities in these devices, leading to physical and psychological harm for users.
Research commissioned by the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology highlighted the dangers of remote-controlled sex toys, particularly those with Bluetooth connectivity.
Many of these devices lack proper encryption, making them vulnerable to hacking. This could allow attackers to take control of the device or intercept data from the connected app.
The risks include psychological harm from the exposure of sensitive personal data, as well as physical harm, such as devices overheating or being locked remotely with a ransom demand to unlock them.
To reduce the risk, experts recommend asking if you really need to connect your sex toy to an app.
If remote control is necessary, ensure both the device and the connected smartphone are regularly updated with the latest software and firmware to protect against potential hacks.
