Apple Testing Under-Screen Face ID for iPhone 18 Pro, Leak Claims

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its first iPhones with under-display Face ID next year. According to a trusted leakster on Weibo, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature Face ID sensors hidden beneath the screen, marking a major design change for future iPhones.

The iPhone 17 series, expected later this year, will still have a Dynamic Island cutout. But starting with the iPhone 18 Pro models in 2026, Apple may finally remove visible Face ID components from the display.

The leaked information suggests that the iPhone 18 Pro will have a 6.27-inch OLED screen, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max will have a 6.86-inch panel.

Both screens will use LTPO technology with 1.5K resolution, offering better efficiency and smoother refresh rates. The phones will also feature HIAA (Hole-in-Active-Area) technology for the front camera, making the screen design cleaner.

Face ID works by projecting infrared light and scanning a user’s face with special sensors. Putting this technology under a display is a major challenge because most current under-display cameras are made for visible light, not infrared. Still, sources claim that Apple already has working prototypes of this new tech.

Rumors about under-display Face ID have been around for years, with early predictions pointing to the iPhone 15 or iPhone 17. However, if everything goes according to plan, 2026’s iPhone 18 Pro lineup could be the one to finally deliver it.

Apple has not confirmed this yet, and plans could still change before launch.
