Apple is actively working on smart glasses that could be released by 2026. The device will compete with Google’s XR glasses and Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. According to Bloomberg, Apple has started developing special low-power chips and is ramping up prototype production by the end of 2025.
These glasses will not offer full augmented reality like the Apple Vision Pro. Instead, they will focus on AI-powered features, including built-in microphones, cameras, and real-time translation. Users may be able to take photos, record videos, and get directions just by wearing the glasses.
Apple’s smart glasses will run on a new chip based on the Apple Watch, which uses less power than iPhone chips. This helps keep the glasses lightweight and cool.
Apple originally planned to build true AR glasses but paused that idea due to heat and battery challenges. The earlier version would have needed iPhone or Mac power, which proved impractical.
Now, Apple is working on a simpler version, similar in style to Meta’s Ray-Bans, but with better build quality and Apple-designed AI. The company is also testing user experiences under the codename “Atlas” and developing a version of visionOS for glasses.
Apple CEO Tim Cook is strongly pushing the project. He wants Apple to beat Meta to market with truly advanced smart glasses, although full AR versions are still years away.
The first version of Apple’s smart glasses is expected to be announced by late 2026.
