For the first time in 14 years, Apple did not announce any major new hardware products in 2024.
Apple focused on updating and improving its existing devices rather than introducing completely new product lines in 2024.
No New Hardware, Only Updates
In 2024, Apple launched several hardware updates, such as the redesigned iPad Pro and Mac mini.
However, these were updates to existing product categories, not new product lines. The only new announcement of note was Apple Intelligence, which is a software-based update, not a hardware release.
A Look at Apple’s Past Hardware Announcements
From 2010 to 2023, Apple introduced many new products every year. Here’s a look at some of them:
- 2023: Apple Vision Pro
- 2022: Mac Studio, Studio Display, Apple Watch Ultra
- 2021: AirTag
- 2020: Apple Silicon, MagSafe, HomePod mini, AirPods Max
- 2019: AirPods Pro, Pro Display XDR, Apple Card
- 2018: iPhone XS Max
- 2017: iMac Pro, HomePod, iPhone X
- 2016: iPhone SE, AirPods
- 2015: iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, Apple TV HD
- 2014: Apple Watch
- 2013: iPhone 5C, iPad Air
- 2012: iPad mini
- 2011: Thunderbolt Display
- 2010: iPad
In 2024, there was no new product line like in the past. Instead, Apple worked on improving the devices it already has.
Why No New Hardware?
Many of Apple’s products are already very advanced. Instead of creating new categories, Apple focused on perfecting its current lineup.
For example, the iPad Pro got an OLED display, and the Apple Watch Series 10 had a more refined design. The new M4 chips also showed Apple’s focus on improving its hardware.
Apple’s Vision Pro, which was announced in 2023, launched in February 2024. This new product line required a lot of attention and resources. It is likely that this, along with the development of Apple Intelligence, took up much of Apple’s focus in 2024.
Additionally, Apple’s electric vehicle project, which was rumored but later canceled, may have used up some of the company’s resources.
This, along with the global slowdown caused by COVID-19, likely affected Apple’s ability to introduce new products in 2024.
Looking Ahead to 2025
While 2024 didn’t bring new hardware, rumors suggest that Apple may introduce a new product in 2025.
There are talks of a smart home “Command Center” with a 7-inch display, which could be a new product line for Apple. However, no major new hardware is expected for the rest of the year.
