Apple Rejects Approval of “Hot Tub” Porn App on AltStore

Apple has raised alarms about a porn app, Hot Tub, available through the third-party app store AltStore PAL in the EU. Apple calls the app a safety risk, especially for children, and denies approving it.

Apple’s Reaction

Apple says it’s “deeply concerned” about the app, calling it a threat to consumer trust. The company emphasized that it would never approve such an app for its App Store. Apple also pointed out that its notarization process doesn’t mean it endorses the app.

AltStore’s Response

AltStore creator Riley Testut denied Apple’s claims. He said Hot Tub passed Apple’s notarization process and was approved for distribution through alternative app stores.

He referenced the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which allows third-party stores in the EU, even without Apple’s approval.

Digital Markets Act Impact

The DMA forces Apple to allow third-party stores in Europe, opening the door for apps like Hot Tub.

Apple’s frustration with the regulation is clear, as it believes the law compromises safety and control over content.

Epic Games’ Stance

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney clarified that his company’s store doesn’t carry any porn apps. Epic gave AltStore funding but doesn’t share its views on the app.

Looking Ahead

The release of Hot Tub signals more challenges ahead for Apple, as third-party app stores gain more influence in the EU. The debate over user safety versus freedom of app distribution continues.
