Apple Music is set to introduce new AI transparency tags that will show when artificial intelligence has played a major role in creating music.
According to a report by 9to5Mac on March 4, 2026, Apple sent an email to music partners explaining the change. The new system is called Transparency Tags, and it will apply to future releases delivered to Apple Music.
The tags will highlight four areas where AI may have been used: artwork, individual tracks, compositions and music videos.
If AI helped create a large part of an album cover or motion artwork, it will be tagged. If AI generated a significant part of a sound recording, lyrics, composition or video visuals, that will also need to be disclosed.
However, Apple is leaving it up to labels and distributors to decide what counts as a “material portion” of AI use. If no tag is added, Apple will assume that AI was not used in a major way.
AI tools are becoming more common in music production. Artists now use AI to generate beats, vocals, cover art and even full music videos. Apple says the tags are a first step toward clearer rules and better transparency in the industry.
There will be no immediate changes to older songs already on the platform. The new tags will only apply to upcoming releases.
