Apple surprised many in 2020 by launching the iPhone 12 mini, a small phone with the same features as the iPhone 12 but in a compact 5.4-inch size.
The iPhone mini line lasted only two years, with the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. After that, Apple replaced it with the larger iPhone 14 Plus.
The iPhone mini struggled because it was expensive and had shorter battery life. Many people preferred to pay a little more for a bigger phone with better battery performance.
This is different from the success of the original iPhone SE, which was smaller and more affordable.
Recently, Apple introduced the iPhone 16e, priced at $599. It is a 6.1-inch phone with updated features like a USB-C port and a new chip. However, it only comes in one size, unlike other iPhones that offer two sizes.
Some experts think Apple could bring back the iPhone mini as part of the “e” lineup. A smaller iPhone 16e mini priced around $499 could attract many buyers. The lower price would make the trade-offs of a small phone more acceptable.
Apple has already done much of the research and development for a small phone, so making a new iPhone mini would not be difficult.
There are also reports that Apple may change its release schedule in 2026, launching some models in the spring. This could give a new iPhone mini more attention.
While the chance of an iPhone mini return is low, many fans still hope Apple will offer a small, affordable phone again. For now, people who want a small iPhone can find refurbished iPhone 13 mini models online for under $300.
