Android Phones May Soon Get iPhone-Like Standby Mode

Google is working on a new feature that could turn Android phones into smart displays, similar to Standby Mode on iPhones.

In iOS, Standby Mode shows a large clock, photos, or widgets when the iPhone is charging sideways. Now, signs show that Google is preparing a similar feature for Android phones.

Clues came from Google Play Services version 25.18, which included a line about using “Cast on standby-friendly devices.” This was marked for phones, suggesting Google may let phones show smart-display features while charging.

Right now, Android phones can’t receive Cast the same way tablets or smart displays do. But that may change, especially with the rise of Qi2 wireless charging, which uses magnets for better alignment—perfect for landscape charging.

On the software side, Android 16 is expected to bring back lock screen widgets, including a new Hub Mode optimized for phones. This mode could show widgets, clocks, and photos while the phone charges.

There’s also a new “Standby” button found in Android 16’s code. It seems to launch both a screen saver and the new widgets, making the feature even more like Apple’s version.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but all signs point to Android getting its own smart display mode soon. If so, Android phones will be more useful even when idle and charging.
