Google has released the second developer preview (DP2) of Android 16, offering developers an early look at the features set to debut in the stable version next year.

Here’s everything you need to know about Android 16 DP2.

Notable Features in Android 16 DP2

  1. Enhanced Haptics Control
Developers can now fine-tune haptic effects using new APIs, allowing custom vibrations with precise amplitude and frequency adjustments. This improvement eliminates device-specific inconsistencies.
  2. Adaptive Refresh Rate Support
Android 16 expands on the adaptive refresh rate feature introduced in Android 15, enabling apps to better align refresh rates with content frame rates. New APIs help developers optimize this functionality for supported devices, like the Pixel 9 series.
  3. Photo Picker with Search
The photo picker will soon include a search function for easier navigation. This feature, rolling out via Google System Updates, supports cloud media providers like Google Photos.
  4. Improved Wi-Fi Ranging Security
Wi-Fi Ranging, which offers precise indoor location tracking, now includes AES-256 encryption to prevent MITM attacks. This upgrade enhances its use in proximity-based applications like unlocking devices.
  5. Activity Intensity in Health Connect
Health Connect introduces activity intensity tracking, aligning with WHO guidelines. The feature records moderate and vigorous activity levels, adding more depth to fitness data.
  6. Predictive Back Gesture Updates
New APIs improve predictive back gestures, ensuring smoother transitions and animations when navigating apps.
  7. Less Disruptive Accessibility Announcements
Accessibility announcements have been revamped to reduce disruptions for TalkBack and screen reader users. Deprecated APIs are replaced with alternatives for a more consistent experience.

  • JobScheduler Enhancements: New methods provide insights into pending job constraints and execution history.
  • Profiling Improvements: System-triggered profiling captures trace scenarios like app startups.
  • Deprecated Features: The JobInfo#setImportantWhileForeground method is fully deprecated.
