A24 and China’s CMC Pictures will release an English-language version of Ne Zha 2, China’s highest-grossing animated film, in theaters across North America and select international markets on August 22.
Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh will lead the English voice cast. The film will be available in IMAX, 3D, and other premium formats, marking a rare theatrical collaboration between A24 — known for critically acclaimed films like Uncut Gems and Past Lives — and state-backed CMC Pictures, a major global distributor of Chinese cinema.
Directed by Yang Yu (also known as Jiaozi), Ne Zha 2 is the sequel to the 2019 hit Ne Zha. The film continues the modern retelling of a mythological Chinese folk hero, combining epic fantasy, high-concept storytelling, and striking visuals.
Since its release during China’s Lunar New Year holiday earlier this year, Ne Zha 2 has earned $2.2 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time, surpassing Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Nearly all of the revenue came from the Chinese mainland, and it currently ranks as the fifth-highest-grossing film ever.
Michelle Yeoh expressed her excitement, saying, “I’m honored to be part of Ne Zha 2, a landmark in Chinese animation and a powerful reminder of how universal our stories can be.” She added that sharing the film in English would allow even more people to experience its magic.
The story follows Ne Zha, a rebellious demigod born to mortal parents, as he struggles with his powers and destiny while facing a rising ancient evil threatening humanity. The film has received strong critical praise and is the highest-rated animated film of 2025 on Rotten Tomatoes, also ranking among the top-rated films on Letterboxd.
This release will test North American audience interest in Chinese animated storytelling and could help expand crossover success for international films, especially when supported by global stars and premium formats.
