FIFA, the organization that runs world soccer, may bring back its popular FIFA video game series this year. FIFA ended its partnership with game maker EA Sports in 2022 after 30 years.
EA Sports had made the FIFA video games each year, but the two companies could not agree on financial terms for a new deal. EA Sports has now renamed its soccer game “EA FC.”
However, reports say that FIFA has made a new licensing deal with game publisher 2K Sports. 2K Sports makes games like the NBA 2K basketball series.
The rumored new deal could allow 2K Sports to release a “FIFA 2K25” video game as early as later in 2024, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
FIFA’s president had said the real “FIFA” game series would continue after splitting from EA Sports. However, making a new competitive soccer video game from scratch is very difficult and expensive.
Most experts are skeptical that a new FIFA game could really launch in just a few months this year. But 2K Sports’ parent company Take-Two has a lot of resources from successful games like Grand Theft Auto.
If the reports are true, it will be exciting news for soccer fans looking for an alternative to EA’s long-running FIFA series, now renamed EA FC. But fans may need to be patient for a high-quality new FIFA game to arrive.
